Wood fences are the most commonly installed fences, particularly for privacy purposes. A wood fence offers a variety of benefits:

However, there are some disadvantages to wood fences that are worth mentioning. While vinyl and metal fences can last up to 50 years, wood fences last about 10-20 years and require regular maintenance. If they are stained or painted they will require periodic re-staining to keep it that color. Wood is also an unpredictable material that can split or crack in certain weather conditions. They are labor intensive to repair - a whole new panel will be needed if one post breaks to keep the section from falling apart and looking unified.

While wood fences require more work it really boils down to what you want your fence to look like. If this is the option you want, it is absolutely worth the extra effort.
